November 10, 2010

We have now learned that our Verizon internet service does not work well in parts of Arizona and Nevada! I have not been able to post each evening and am therefore having to rely on my memory to hold over a day or two! Yesterday we drove up to Bullhead City, Arizona and unhooked the Jeep and drove over or Oatman, Arizona which is an old gold mining town on historic Route 66. There are wild burrows that roam the streets and a few times a day some 'cowboys' come out in the street and have a gun fight! We had lunch in the Oatman hotel and the entire restaurant and bar area are lined with dollar bills that people staple to the walls (rumor has it there are over 80,000 $1 bills)----the food was good and one of the cowboys from the gun fight came in and played the guitar and sang.

It says that in the 1930's they mined tens of millions of dollars worth of gold from the surrounding mines (at 1930 dollar amounts)----in the 40's when the government decided the gold was not necessary for the war effort, the town sort of dried up. Now it is just a tourist attraction.

We went back to Bullhead City, hooked back up and went across the Colorado River into Laughlin, Nevada and spent our first night at a casino! Laughlin is like a mini Reno or Las Vegas--a small strip with casinos ---and they let you park overnight in the parking lots--- I'm sure with the hopes that you will go inside and 'donate' money! I did give them about $20 in the penny slot machines! Big spender!

This morning we walked along the river walk and are now headed towards Bakersfield, California.

Rested last night in Laughlin, Nevada...Debbie and  John
